How a singer can avoid getting sick

This time of year is especially crucial as a professional singer.  It is the holiday season and the time when singers get the most opportunities to perform.  Unfortunately this is also the time when illness tends to hit most everyone.  There are a few ways you can help prevent catching your yearly cold or flu which can cost you gigs, time and money.

  1. Wash your hands. This is one of the more obvious ways to avoid illness and also one of the most simple.  Think a second about the fact that we have between 2 and 10 million bacteria on our hands.  This number doubles after you use the restroom.
  2. Drink a lot of water. Aside from the obvious benefits of drinking, water can help wash cold and flu viruses out of your throat and into your stomach where they can not live.
  3. Sleep.  Do your best to get a full nights sleep every chance you get.  Sleeping allows the body to recover and is vital to fight off illness.
  4. Vitamin c.  There are mixed reviews about the effectiveness of vitamin C helping to prevent colds.  However we certainly know that your body needs it anyway so you might as well stock up.
  5. Don’t share food, drinks, or chapstick.  Your mom always told you this growing up and as you know she is usually right.  This is a good life rule not just to avoid catching the flu or a cold but there other things your transfer or catch from to much sharing.
  6. Don’t touch your face.  Avoid touching your face as most germs enter your body through your nose and your mouth.
  7. Visit an ENT.  Sometimes you can’t avoid getting sick but you should have an ENT who knows you are your medical history to be there for you in case you do get sick.
  8. Wear a scarf.  This is also largely debated. Some people say keeping your neck warm will help prevent illness.  This is likely a myth however scarfs can help the voice stay warm throughout the day after you warm up in the morning and lets face it they are cute so why not give it a try.
  9. 9 gargle with hydrogen peroxide or alkalol.  As we discovered before germs get into your nose and throat before getting absorbed into your blood stream.  If you can kill them before they are in your system you will not get sick.  I recommend gargeling with hydrogen peroxide and using alkalol as a nasal or oral rinse.  I have done this for two years now and I have only gotten sick once since. I highly recommend this!!!!!

good luck,
