About the Piano
Piano is the most popular and commonly studied instrument we teach, largely do to its versatility. It is an excellent choice for both children and adults. Most adults who wished they had learned an instrument as a child would like to have taken piano lessons
The basic piano is a large wooden box that contains a large number of strings. The length and width of the strings determines if the pitches sound low or high. The keys on the piano are connected to hammers which hit the strings to create sound.

- Teachers should care about you as a person not just a paycheck
- Performance opportunities are important

Teachers at Green Room Music Studios excel in their fields. We also have a large percentage of teachers at Green Room who perform professionally. This can help you so much if you want perform or audition for a music school. We also are very picky about who we let teach here we not only prioritize education and experience but also
personality and ability to communicate. We truly believe that piano lessons are best with an educated teacher but you need to find a teacher who you enjoy and who cares about you. Here are some things to look for:
- Do you like the teacher
- You should learn things at every lesson
- You should understand what your teacher is explaining
- You should notice progress
- Your teacher should have at least some education in their instrument
- Your teacher should provide performance opportunities for you
- Your teacher should be able to demonstrate what they are asking you to do
- They are excited to teach you
- They get to know you and seem to truly care
- They are improving either by performing, reading, school, or their own lessons
Signs of a bad teacher
Santa Clarita is home to many excellent teachers but for every great piano teacher there is another bad one. Green Room Music Studios carefully screens each teacher before allowing them to teach piano lessons. We look at education, experience, personality as well as a background check. If you are looking into piano lessons in Santa Clarita here are a few things to watch out for:
- Do a background check, you never know anyones history and its best to be safe
- A bad teacher will not care about the student or ask how they are doing
- If you are not learning at least a few songs within 3 months you have a bad teacher
- If they are not teaching theory, scales, and technique during piano lessons
- Bad teachers will not provide performance opportunities or recitals
- If you leave your piano lessons confused and lost
Typical lesson/what to expect
Piano lessons will vary slightly from teacher to teacher but you should expect a few basic things at your piano lessons. Teachers will provide you with the materials you need such as books or sheet music. You may be asked to reimburse them for the expense but you won’t need to go find learning materials on your own.
From your very first lesson you should be playing the piano. You should be working on at least a very basic song right away. It will be very simple and probably with just one hand but you will be making music at the very first lesson. Focus should be given on technique, note reading, rhythm and very basic songs. A good teacher will assign home work and will enforce it. Piano lessons require you to work outside of lesson to see good progress so be prepared to do some work at home. You may need to invest in at least a keyboard to practice on.
Once you have the basics down you will progress into scales, theory, chords and other aspects of music study in addition to playing songs. Eventually, when you are ready, you will have the opportunity to perform at a recital or other venue if you so choose. You will never be forced to perform but we highly encourage it as it will grow you as a musician.
To be prepared for your first piano lesson there are a few things you may want to bring. Some teachers will provide materials but you may want to bring a small notebook to write down assignments or useful notes, a binder to carry music in, a pencil, water, and you may want to cut your nails before coming. The sound of nails clicking on a keyboard are generally very annoying.
Comfortable waiting room
Green Room Music Studios prides itself on having one of the most comfortable and welcoming facilities. Santa Clarita has many music studios to choose from but often times their studios and waiting areas are very intimidating and can make lessons cramped and uncomfortable. We do our best to make your experience as a student as relaxed as possible and if you are waiting for your piano lesson we want you to be comfortable as well. We are continually trying to improve and make your experience at Green Room Music Studios amazing. This is why we keep our instruments in tune, buy high quality pianos and reinvest in our facility. We try to create a space that feels like a home and not an industrial center. Creativity thrives in a safe environment and we do our best to provide one.
We at Green Room Music Studios are constantly trying to provide our students with opportunities to perform as well as altering our students at upcoming auditions. We hold semi annual recitals, musical theater nights, and our working toward more productions. Piano lessons are great but we want out students to be able to shine on stage as well. If you want to perform we will make it happen. Be sure to tell your teacher you want to perform and they will help you find a venue and prepare you.
Musical Theater Nights are one of our favorite outlets that Green Room Music Studios provides. We have an evening once a month where we have local talent and students perform musical theater numbers at Vincenzos Pizza. The food is excellent and you will love the talent. Vincenzos is located off of lyons avenue in Santa Clarita. Our students often perform at this event and if you would like to attend or participate talk to your teacher to sign up or get more information.
Green Room Music Studios is very proud of our recitals. We allow any student at the studio to perform if they would like. Recitals are especially fun at green room because it not just for those in piano lessons its every instrument in one recital which makes them very entertaining. So our recitals are very well attended and lots of fun. We want all of our students to have an opportunity to showcase their skills and make sure we have a beautiful venue with an excellent instrument! Often you can win prizes at the recital and enjoy the reception we have afterwards to celebrate with your friends and family. If you are intimidated by the idea of performing in front of audience talk to your teacher they wont force you to perform but they may be able to help you if you are struggling with stage fright or have other concerns.

Pianos have the ability to create a large variety of sounds but are simple enough that most piano students begin playing songs their very first lesson.
Piano is the perfect starter instrument as they provide a solid foundation for understanding music. Many students move on to other instruments after falling in love with music through piano.
Studies show that children who study piano score noticeably higher on standard and spatial cognitive development tests. There is also an increase in hand-eye coordination, confidence, concentration, and discipline. Contact one of our teachers today to find out more or schedule an intro lesson!

The longest piano piece of any kind is ‘Vexations’ by Erik Satie. It consists of a 180-note composition which, on the composer’s orders, must be repeated 840 times so that the whole performance is 18 hours 40 minutes. Its first reported public performance in September 1963, in the Pocket Theater, New York City, required a relay team of 10 pianists. The New York Times critic fell asleep at 4 a.m. and the audience dwindled to 6 people. At the conclusion, one audience member shouted ‘Encore!’
Grands can actually be played faster than uprights. The hammers on the grand return to their original position than the vertical uprights, thus can produce notes faster.
